The future is another land

Okay, now that's a lame rephrase.

Last night, Jo and I were chatting about her dissertation, and talk naturally turned to the future, our plans, and where on earth we want to end up. Not surprisingly, we both expressed a desire to stay here, this country being a happy happy place in which to live, despite the flawed system and the stupid people running it. I know I always complain about lots of things going on in the country, but at the end of the day, I do think I'm still really lucky to be here.

That doesn't mean I'm not keen on leaving the country temporarily. I think it would be loads of fun to try living elsewhere for a couple of years. I've mostly got England on my mind, and New Zealand and Dubai are pretty interesting as well, the latter because I am seriously interested in working for Arabian Woman, hehe. Or perhaps do some volunteer work in Nepal or Kenya. I don't even have to stay there for years and years. Even six months could make me happy. Of course, if the U.S. petition ever kicks in, I'm going to have to haul myself over there, but that won't be happening any time soon.

It's kind of sad that some people think staying here means that you're ignoring the chance for progress and fortune. Everyone always says that a better life can be attained when you go abroad. But let's just say what if there's a big chance here? Yeah, yeah, it's easy for me to say that, given the fact that I'm young and free from obligations, and I don't have a family to support. So why not make a go of it here anyway? See how things work out.

Of course, I could just be saying that to cover up the fact that I'm a big lazy chicken.

I see a lot of volunteer opportunities on Idealist.org and they sound like they'll be interesting experiences. Hope I can get up the nerve to actually pursue them!
