I saw on the news earlier how smuggled luxury vehicles were crushed to smithereens in Subic. Supposedly, it's meant to send out a warning to those attempting to smuggle in these kinds of things, but for a lot of people, it just signifies a lot of waste.
A Lincoln Navigator, three BMW X5s, a Chevrolet Camper and a Mitsubishi GTO sports car were among the vehicles worth a total of P30 million pesos (US$652,000) crushed by backhoes in the Subic Bay Freeport as Finance Secretary Margarito Teves and customs officials watched. Read more.
P30 million gone just like that. I'm sure it's practically NOTHING to the government, but I can think of several hundred thousand people who could have greatly benefited from that amount. Surely there was a better solution?
