I was reading one of my guilty pleasures the other day and she mentioned something called nasi kangkang. I promptly thought it was something dirty, given the local meaning of the word "kangkang"* so I had to check it out. And I found this.
Nasi KangKang, literally means Squatting Rice. It's some sort of love potion made for men. It was believed that after eating the rice, the man was bound to abide entirely by the woman's wishes. His mind will be reset and zombified. Any of the woman's wishes such as, "buy me a diamond" would be fulfilled immediately.
First thought: ewww. Then I realized: kangkang = bukangkang**? I never can get over the fact that our local languages are really truly Southeast Asian/Austronesian. It also made me wonder if we have any similar love spells here.
* This seriously reminds me of a discussion back in college about different aspects of Philippine history that we could write about. While I was thinking about food history, one classmate was laughing at the idea of writing about kangkangan ng mga Katipunero. Funny funny girl.
** Legs spread wide open
*** Sleepy rambling. Really must turn in.

Hmm I thought that Nasi Kangkang has always been a Kelantanese / East Coast Peninsular Malaysian punishment from the women folk to the men who cheat on them; and also it's know that Kelantanese women do somewhat have a little more power than the men (like running the grocery store etc as illustrated by Lat)

Hmm, thank you for the info then. It's a topic I'm pretty interested in (just to clarify: I'm not planning on doing that), so it's always nice to find out more details about it :D
