Atrocity

Now here's a man I fervently salute. Antonio Calipjo Go, I support you in your crusade to rid school textbooks of errors such as:

  • Ang kahirapan ay hindi sagabal patungong kaitaasan.
  • Bumabalik ang mga mangingisda sa aplaya sa pagbubukang-liwayway sa umaga. >> Now here's a redundancy if I ever saw one.
  • "Here's for you!" the guard said while hitting Basilio. >> It seems like a literal translation of "Eto'ng sa 'yo!" Though if we're to be nitpicky about it, it really should be "This is for you!"
  • Galileo invented a magnifying telescope to study the moon.
  • It is very dangerous to face a bull that has been played with.
  • We grow our hogs in our own farms so you're sure to get meat that is grown.
  • The mountain climber was flown off his feet.
  • The lakes widdled down in the hollows of the ground. >> Lakes widdle! Holy @#*!, that would be an incredible sight.
  • July is a month to remember our American friends forever. >> This totally screams 'little brown brother'.

I swear I could probably make some of them my really hilarious personal quotes, like, "Because you made a fool of me, you'll get the greatest wrath." Woot.

Seriously, I have no idea how anyone can accuse him of taking the passages out of context, because there is no way that these things could be correct even in their proper context. Apart from being hilariously written and grossly inaccurate, this just proves that education in the country is in a sad, sad state, especially when you think about how the writers and editors of those textbooks are people who have already completed their studies. Then again, it's either they really had no idea that the books are bubbling over with errors, or they're just so disgruntled with their jobs that they no longer give a crap what they put out there.

I personally don't have an issue with the use of the Filipino terms for genitalia, though, but otherwise, I support that campaign, and oh, what I'd give to be able to edit the living hell out of those textbooks.
